I've used all sorts of makes of tyres on my Golfs and for normal road use and all have been pretty decent except the Dunlop Sportmaxx GT's which were okay in the dry bit rubbish in the wet.

Michelin PS3
Goodyear Eagle Assym 2's

The new Pirellis are also getting some good reviews.

Hate my PS3s in the wet. Eagle F1s all day long, although a little soft on the sidewall so not much warning when they are gonna give way.

I also have to replace my front tyres on my mk5 GTi. I currently have Dunlop Sport MAXX all round. And although they are an okay tyre I do find them a little if any confidence inspiring tyre.

I have been looking at GYEF1 AS2 and PS3 and Conti Sport Contact 3/5. Not sure which one to go for.  Reading reviews on tyrereviews.co.uk

Edit:  Do I need XL tyre?

XL is for extra load as in vans normally. I'd steer clear of the PS3 for the wet conditions we mainly have. Cornering and accelerate suffer poorly IMO with these and I'm driving back to back compared to GY EF1s that were on my older mk5 Gti.

I have  always used Michelin's on my GTI as i find they are great in the wet and have a good wear rate.Work friends have used ther makes but dont last half as long.More expensive but worth the money for me.

most tyres seem to be loud on the golf, i am now running Hankook Ventus Prime, good in the wet, good for fuel and everyday road use and not to loud either. Price was about £100-£120 each.. i used blackcircles in the end they seemed ok and had a good price and guides to tyres etc.. just read up about the garage you use, i spent all my time on the tyres and never really read about the garage and then they decided that i needed my wheel alignment done for £150 (Rip off) despite the fact that i had just had them done a month before in the service.. i was very angry as you can imagine.

Would go for Nokian Line..... they are very good in the dry and brilliant in the wet....
go for about 90£ each which is pretty good compared to others
