Overheating problem
« on: 24 July 2005, 16:48 »
Since i've had my 1.8t, there have been a couple of occasions when i have left it running to let the turbo cool and the forgotten about it.  It has then sat there and overheated.  I assumed it was the fan failing to work but when i took it to the garage the mechanic said that the fan was fine and this was a common problem with the mk4.  Well at Bugjam yesterday i left the car running as i had the stereo on and all of a sudden smoke appeared from under the bonnet and as before it had overheated just sitting there (trouble was i thought it was the BBQ next to my car at first)

Is this a common fault or is there something seriously wrong?

Left mine running for almost an hour at BVF to use the stereo while we camped, and mine never overheated :undecided:

Do you have Climatronic? Was it on? Can you hear it firing up very frequently? If yes to all, then it could be your A/C fan. Mine went bust like that and had to be replaced. Scared me sh!tless, but in the end that's all it was. Only happened when the vehicle was iddle; aparently if you're on the move it doesn't... Go figure...

argh... I feel for you... Just checked the invoice: it was about £310 for the repair, which included 2 fans being replaced. Aparently it was £80 just to find the fault...

It's a 2002 PD150, imported from Denmark, for the obvious reasons... Climatronic broke down at 2 years and 7 months, warranty only covered 2 years...
