Wot is the best fabric to use when replacing the headlining

It's difficult to say what the best would be, but the fabric I used was great to work with, cheap to buy and best of all looks good

Has any one do it in swade or is carpet the best way

I would guess any material with a reasonable thickness to support the headliner backing and that had a little stretch to work into the shapes would be fine
