A MK4 all day long. For looks a MK4 over a MK3, for power a mapped MK4 over a MK3. Did I mention a MK4 just because it's a MK4?

Agree with this. Had my 1.8t for nearly 2 years now and nothing major has gone wrong with it but the little things really have added up, ABS problems, front bushes now 3 of my door locks have broke.

Think I have spent near on £800 in 2 years to fix the little problems.

Don't get me wrong, I love driving it but it has been the most expensive car to run and maintain I have ever owned

This!!! The mk3 is known for Being a boat. But the mk4 is bigger and heaver! And did someone just say the mk4 looks better?  :laugh:

I'd say get a mk3 16v, and then when your bord of it, do a 1.8t conversion onit (and remap it of corse)

Oh dear, what have I started...

I'm more confused than ever now - I would prefer to stay with a VW, and a GTi, but I also want a car that I can just hop into and drive. I don't want to be fixing niggles and stuff all the time. Sadly my most recent experience with a MK4 was with one that had x2 electric windows inop, central locking borked on one door and other gremlins - I wasn't sure if this was a Friday afternoon car, or more like the "norm".

I would go for a MK5, but I just don't have that sort of money.
