The A3 is on a 62 plate took delivery in Sept 12 not sure if this makes it an MQB, the Mk6 Golf is a bit older but is pretty similar spec.
In the GTD you dont mind the firm sporty ride as it has the power and handling to make it fun, but in the lower spec model it just gets annoying.
Although I prefer the VW/Audi cars I must say there are some better non VAG ones out there for long journeys.
The nice comfortable VAG cars are a promotion or two away for me  saying that the new Skoda octavia is out in March and starts at 14k might take a look at that or just keep taking the money and running a shed/boat to work

I know what you mean, hence why the Volvo is now also a contender.

It wasn't MBQ then as the sport pack was a free upgrade on the MK2, this is not an option for the mk3 MBQ.  Plus it's not been available to order for long.

Its a bit of a cr@p time to order as I would have liked to have waited to see what Skoda has to offer with their new Octavia.

Looks like an A3 has looked for years
Most likely the old model, I dont pay much attention to what modern cars look like as i have not got the 80's out of my system yet
I will ask next time

I have been racking up the miles in an end of lease 2011 318i, it goes back at 100k and there is about another 3k to go.
Lots of folk poo poo them but run flat tyres and stupid stop start aside its been pretty good.
Much nicer over a long journey than some of the previous cars, always get out of it feeling fresh.
One of the best cars was Vicky the slush box Vectra 2.2 SRI.
Crap round corners, heavy on fuel + a few electrical gremlins but London to Llanberis or Lanarkshire it was a dream

There is a V40 next but it being our OCD perfectionist MD's old wagon I will be avoiding this given my history with senior staff cars :lipsrsealed:

Well it looks like the A3 may be off the cards as it is now clear that most of what was on my list is no longer valid and mostly consisted of old stock.

Could be a coin toss between Golf 7 or Volvo v40.

The golf seems to have more useful standard extras.  Testing the Volvo on Saturday.

the golf 7 will be much better to drive than the equivalent a3. the audis are too crashy and always have been.

audi still thinks sporty means rock solid ride.  :lipsrsealed:

The mk7 TDI's spec lists look quite tasty as it goes.

Hi Shaun,

Missed the replies to my earlier post. I got my V40 on Monday and seems good so far. Unfortunately it's not an R-Design but an ES Nav. Loads of kit in it and excellent to drive - handling is superb, very composed on motorways and so far averaging 57mpg at 'motorway speeds' (it's done nearly 700 miles since Monday - one of those weeks it seems!). Only thing I would say is that I wish the seat would go back slightly further (I'm 6ft7) but it definitely not uncomfortable, more I've been used to the likes of the Mazda etc which are huge. I'd have been tempted with a Mk7 golf possibly but they were too new for our list. We did have a Passat SE on there tho and after a weekends test drive it left me with chronic back ache, huge disappointment as I fancied two VW badges on the drive but the seats were woeful.

I'd be interested to see how you get on with the V40, I'm very taken with mine. Needs decent size wheels mind!

Paul

Nice little write up Paul.

Well I had an hour with the v40, was lucky enough to play with the R-Design.  Must admit that sitting in it felt very upper class, seats look and feel amazing.  Lovely materials throughout and liked the LCD dash very much.  Like you say, it drives well, very well composed, very quiet in the cabin and comfortable.  However, even at 6' 1" I felt a tad claustrophobic, particularly on my offside where my head felt very close to the side and the roof.  Looking over my shoulder was pointless, c pillars are like a foot thick with a letter box for a rear window.  If any car had to have blind spot monitoring as standard, its this one.

Straight after the drive I went to vw Leicester.  Great staff there and had both the models I wanted to se, a GT and an SE.  I hate to say it but it felt like a massive step down climbing inside either of them after the Volvo.  However, it felt gimmick free and well thought out.  Need to drive one.
