I try to service my car once a year and as I only do about 7000 miles every year then the oil is never in there for that long. I read on this forum and was told by my mechanic that even when you are not on the long life service plan it is always best to use the long life oil as it is just generally better than the normal stuff.

This being said should I go for this Mobile One oil or something like the Castrol Edge Fully Synthetic 5W30 Engine Oil? Also will 4ltrs be enough for an oil change or do I need more?

4.6 litres is what's required for an oil change.

0w40 (Mobil One) is better on cold start up than 5w30 (Castrol Edge or other brand). It also has better additives than a 5w30 equivalent oil, meaning it has a higher thermal and oxidation stability, so helps keep the engine clean and prevents large build ups of sludge. Generally you will get better oil consumption from 0w40, especially Mobil One, meaning less top ups required between changes. Due to the working efficiency of the oil you can see improved fuel mpg (This will however will be marginal at best)

Sounds like a winner to me and they sell it in 5ltr tubs so that’s a plus too.

Just to make sure this is the one you are talking about right

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-accessories/engine-oils-and-car-fluids/engineoils/0w40-engine-oil/?521771851&0&cc5_252

Also me doing around the 7000 mile mark between services will be ok, I wont need to change my oil more regularly than that?

Thanks for all your advice by the way, massive help.
Mrk V, GTI, 3dr, DSG, heated seats, winter pack, cruise control, rear parking sensors and now thanks to GizzyWizzy and SteveP in the MK6 section a RCD 510. Awesome!

That's the one mate. Remember the promo code (MIDMONTH31)

7,000 miles between oil changes is okay, it'll certainly be a lot better than most. But as you say it's a year between changes, regardless of mileage and to be honest it depends entirely upon your driving style. For example doing a years worth of shortish journeys, usually driving the car quite hard, even if it is only 7,000 miles will dirty the oil quite considerably. Paradoxically if you were to do say 12,000 miles a year, but it was predominantly motorway miles, at relatively low rpm and you didn't rag it as much, then the oil would be in better condition.

If I was in your shoes and me being anal about it (as I always am) I would probably do 2 changes a year, at least then you have peace of mind and it looks very good to a future buyer if they can see that you've really nurtured the car. If you don't want to go the expense of £40-50 every six months, then you could always use the following products when having your oil change which would ensure longevity and keep your engine and oil even cleaner....

http://www.forteuk.co.uk/product.php?id=43/Advanced_Formula_Motor_Flush - (This one goes in with the old oil before you drain it. You leave the car running for 20 to 30 minutes on idle and it will clean the engine, crankcase, valves etc prior to filling up with fresh oil.)

Then once you have completed that process you drain the oil and halfway through adding the fresh stuff you add this....

http://www.forteuk.co.uk/product.php?id=53/Oil_System_Protector - (This basically does everything that the flush does but over a longer period of time. It also further increases the stability and quality of the fresh oil. When used alongside something like Mobil One 0w40 you have the best quality available to your car)

No worries on the advice fella. It's a rarity for me, I can assure you!
