Rocker cover gasket kit still available

Hi all

I just phoned vw to order the rubber rocker cover gasket kit for my 8v Mk2 GTI (I believe with the rubber gasket you need new bolts to fit?) and the guy said there are 2 options but it was unclear whether the bolts were included. Is this kit still available and if so is anyone aware of the part number for the kit?

i doubt the kits will contain bolts. it'll either be a cork gasket or a rubber gasket

you are better just buying the elring item, which includes the studs, from here:-

Ordered one of the kits you suggested thanks. Fingers crossed it is a straight forward job as people have said.

only issue you might have is removing the old studs, give them a soak of wd40 or similar and then use the double nut technique to wind them out

double nut technique is basically putting 2 nuts on the stud and then turning the bottom nut anticlockwise with your spanner, as it tightens up against the top nut it'll then start turning the stud instead which will remove it from the head.

and then dont overtighten the nuts onto the new studs when refitting gasket cover - around 10nm is all the nuts need - and gradually tightening each nut a bit each time until desired torque

I think I'm following. The rubber gasket is thicker than the original cork gasket therefore longer studs are provided.  Do the new studs just need to be finger tight, then nuts tightened to 10nm?  Is it better to tighten the nuts in order of position or to do one then tighten the diagonal one etc?  I was also planning on giving the rocker cover a quick paint, will a normal spray can do or will it need to be special heat resistant paint.

yep studs finger tight just.
smear (finger wipe) a little oil around the gasket face, same idea as oil filter gasket.
id start with nut in middle then work my way out, same idea as head bolts though its not too big a deal as its only 10nm you are applying

paint, id probably just use Hammerite but im not too offey with anything else - ive only hammerited blocks & calipers before etc and paint has held up rightly. just make sure its well prepped for paint
