Engine Enigma
« on: 15 October 2012, 23:29 »
HELLO, yes another 'newbie' but we all start somewhere. Any way introduction over hi 1 and all, everyone good! As some of you may have guessed already, I'm posting because I have a problem, and yes I've looked for possible answers already but the clue is in the title. I have a mk2 golf gti 8v with the old mk3 2E bottom end conversion. Unfortunatly not my own work.... The story goes..... briefly, my old engine was nackered, bought the new engine the 2e conversion, a full rebuild, new this n that, new seals ported polished painted bla bla bla looked the bees knees, and more importantly, yes it ran sweet, I drove the car it was in before it was removed. And so the fun begins. The engine was fitted, all timing marks checked first, all aligned correctly, turned key and fired up first time! Great stuff!!... or at least it was for around 10 mins when it just stopped and wouldn't start. So the plot thickens. Firstly tried turning by hand but it wouldn't turn at all like it was locked. Slipped timing belt off and the top turned fine as did intermediate, but the bottom wouldn't turn for toffee. Dragging on a bit now but am gettin there. Sooooo, I've taken head off to make sure there wasn't any possibility of some foreign body been in there, removed starter no probs there, removed sump, no probs there! Now the head blag. Now the listed things are off, bottom end turns over just as it should! Eh!!! What's the problem you ask, the problem is now it would appear there is no problem, so what caused it? I don't want to put engine back together for the same thing to happen again and drive me self gaa gaa. Is there something I've missed but inadvertently solved? This is seriously doing my nut. I'm open to all suggestions as to a possible cause and effect or any suggestions or pointers or anything because my circuits are fried!!

Hi all, me thinks its a bit early for pics yet, wouldn't want any negative comments as to the state it's in. It has a future, but as am sure we all know, money don't grow on trees. But as to me problem, I'm starting to wonder if it may have owt to do with starter motor?!? I am by no means a mechanic so for me every day under bonnet is a school day.... was pondering tho, if the starter motor doesn't dis-engage after initial start up, does it stil turn with the flywheel or does it 'lock up?' may explain it, if someone knows maybe they could post some info, bit lacking on replies at the mo.
