I was followed by a black ed35 on Thursday on the way home. He probably wondered why I kept looking at it since I was in the Leon.
I see loads of R and GTD round here and the GTI is getting more popular too. Over run with mk5 GTIs

so whats the etiquette for going "nice car mate" as one overtakes a similar level golf.

Flash lights? (before overtaking)....though this seems a bit rude
Honk Horn? .....ya have to work to make it sound friendly.
couple of hazard flashes?
....any others?

None of that imo, a simple raise of the finger from the wheel is about the limit tbh, any more and you look

like a tit!

Glad you said from the wheel

Used to do the flashy light thingy but agree with Jimble, a simply raise of the finger from the wheel or a nod is all its takes...

Whenever I saw another Mk6 GiT I always used to flash my hazards (as inadvertently was usually in front or overtaking of the spotted one), but embarrasingly none ever 'responded' so have now stopped trying to make friendly gestures.
Also tried these friendly gestures with Mk5 GiT's (also flashing them if they passed on opposite side) but again.......nothing, so that was the end of that

Flashing is a grey area imo, if a car flashes me my initial thought is what have i done that's made you flash me?? I would imagine most people are the same?

I love seeing other GTI's of any mk but it's awkward making it known! I was driving my brothers Roc once and had a wave from another Roc driver, tbh it was a bit weird! I've never had a nod or anything driving my GTI..

I've barely seen any mk6 GTI's where I am.. My one is the only one in the town it appears along with a Black GTD.

Anyone else in Essex?

I would guess the Golf GTi customer base was some what diluted with the arrival of the Scirocco, certainly not a common site on the roads

I've got a 35 and I'm in Essex. Seen a fair few GTD's, 1 GTI but no other 35's.

If it is re-assuring I would flash back.....I mean we are nearly in the same league as motordrivers and they keep waving to eachother no matter what.....but any other car or motorist would indeed confuse me....And made me (more) alert

Giving them the middlefinger would be a bit quick on the draw .....it would be a bit of a stupid reaction to a guy warning you to drive slower cause he spotted a police a couple of yards back with a lasergun

You see a lot of Mk5 GTIs near me in North London but relatively few Mk6s - I can't remember ever seeing a 35 other than at the dealership and I've only ever once seen a R on the motorway (must've been travelling from a Ford hot hatch event as it was surrounded by tons of Focus STs, RSs etc).

I tend to nod at fellow GTIers - some reciprocate, most don't! I also find myself catching the eye of some Scirroco owners - I guess many of them appreciate a good GTI.

Once had a Mk3 GTI sit behind me on the motorway for 20 or so miles - perhaps he was just happy with the pace I was setting but I like to think he was showing solidarity with a fellow GTI.
