1990 16v stops running when warm
« on: 11 July 2005, 20:21 »
Hi all, bought a 90 16v 5dr 2 months ago (my 1st ever Golf) and love it to bits but now its gone belly up and wont run!
I picked the car up from the my local garage last week after having a few niggles like fuel gauge not working and instrument bulbs blown fixed. The car had been standing un-used for around 2 weeks. I drove home (about 2miles away) and everything fine but that night i took it out for an extended drive and within 7 miles  the engine died and couldn't be restarted! I always wait until its reg'ing 80 on the temp gauge before i start revving beyond 3000 but that night just as it reached the magic number the car made a slight bang noise and started losing all its power. Within a few more hundred yards it could not hold its revs anymore and died. The car at the moment will start no problem and run for between 5-10 mins before doing exactly the same thing.
I've changed the warm up reg & the airbox/fuel meter and that didn't make a bit of difference, the sparks have been changed about 2000 miles ago so does anyone have any ideas what this prob could be and any clues how to fix?

I have the exact same problem

Changed the Hall sender, spark plugs and leads, both fuel pumps etc........

The Dub us now in disgrace and sitting in a garage.

The mechanic has noticed that the bottom radiator hose remains cold and my temp gauge doesn't read right, so the thermostat is being changed.

Rear core plug is leaking so that needs changing

The tank pump still doesn't appear to be working so it's being changed under warranty...

............................will it fix it ?????

Let you know unless you find the fault first

What a pain eh?

My garage seems to be going down the,HT's braking down or coil giving up when engine gets up to normal operating temp, route. But cause these systems are usually so reliable he scratching his head as to the next thing to check  Should know either way by Thursday so I'll def let you know

Hmmm sounds a bit dodgy guys you got me worrying now! could be a fuel blockage somewhere or fuel filter/pump maybe the cold start valve will kick fuel in until warm? and a daft one but take the little plug from the top of the dissy and clean the contacts got me on a motorway just as car warmed up. I'd take it back to the garage that did the work and get them to have a look at it as they were the last ones to fiddle before it did this the bang sounds worrying though. Is the garage 5 mins away!! :)

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

I've a similar prob, where the revs would die when car was hot (above 80c), it would always start right away though, but was hard to keep running.

Changed the hall sender on the advice of Gambit, which has made a massive difference, but would still do it on occasion.

Just had a go a setting up the CO and idle at the weekend, it is now running leaner, (guessing due the lack of the petrol smel!!l) and so far - even in the hot weather it hasn't died on me.

Finger crossed!

Spoke to the garage and they are looking to replace the warm-up valve.

Will be Thursday before I find out if thats the problem.

I have been down the HT checking route and now don't think it's that. I found that if I fiddles around with the fuel distributor, the problem seemed to go far about 2 minutes. It points me to a fuel problem

I'll keep you posted   :undecided:

just disconnect the warmup regulator and run it for a few days. that'll tell you if its at fault or not

u can run it disconnected without any probs, or loss in performance.

The garage appear to have taken all day to change the warmup valve

They now say it seems to have improved it but need to run it on the krypton tuner, will let let me know tomorrow morning.

Only taken 1.5 weeks so far  Suspect they are former F1 mechanics

Check the coil. Sounds like its breaking down when getting hot.
