Depends what make the winter tyres were you got whether it was a bargain or not as mytyres are doing that size brand new for £60 which is not bad for brand new, sh!tty make though.

I'm always dubious about 2nd hand tyres. I'd hate to be in dead mans shoes so to speak

Bridgestone blizzaks... and although the different between summer and winter tyres is huge. The difference between most of them is not that great  (unless of course you are talking about some totally crap made up named ones).

Anyway.... happy with mine at that price

Think I've narrowed it down to a set of Dezent REs with Conti 830s on. Only choice now is 215/45/17s or 225/45/17s. Although I'd sort of decided on the 215s after discussions earlier in this thread, my local dealer was saying to stick to the original 225 fitting as the 215s would look a bit lost and "gappy". There seems to be about £20 difference between 215 and 225 tyres so should I be £80 bothered about how it looks for a couple of months?

Wouldn't the smaller wheel with lower profile tyres affect the speedo?

Yeah...they would.
Personally, I'd stick to 225/45/17.

I will have to check but I think the legal minimum for winter tyres is 3mm.

Might not have been such a bargain
Mk6 GTi - returned to leasing company after 3 great years and replaced with :

Mk5 GTi - Edition 30 - Revo 1 and some tweaks - 310 bhp. Its a better car than the Mk6  - Now sold and replaced with :

Mk6 R - Rising Blue 5 Door. Won't be standard 270bhp for long

Family Car : Mercedes ML420 with 360 bhp
Looking at Porsche Macan as replacement

I believe the legal minimum is the same as any other tyre - 1.6mm.
But, they are no use when the tread gets low (below 3mm) as the tread blocks need to squirm about to work...and below that, they don't.
In all honesty, ANY road tyre below 3mm is next to useless...especially in the wet.

Regarding affecting the speedo,I have just measured the 16" winter wheel edge of tyre to edge of tyre against the monza edge of tyre to edge of tyre. They are both 24.5 inch so the speedo will be unaffected.
