Rat-look - hot or not?
« on: 28 July 2012, 16:44 »
Just joined this forum today as the others I've been using seem to have quietened down... I'm surprised to note the lack of ratted VDubs on here! Where are you all hiding??!

personally i think rat look is best left to those cars that have rust natural, like old beetles and camper vans etc

man made rat look on newer cars does not work for me :undecided:

This to be honest...

I love rats, beetles, buses, hot rods etc.  But there has been many threads on this subject before and some of the cars that get posted are laughable.  The most stupid I posted was a mint mk5 golf wearing a rusty bonnet, roofrack full of sh*t and white walls!... I mean come on now.

Old hot rods and the odd old vdub that are genuine rats...anything else its just looks wrong in my opinion. Fake rust has to be the worst idea known to man.

Yeah definitely agree with you there! I'm talking more the older MK1s and MK2s - those beautiful right angles were made for showcasing a bit of orange rust surely? Adds a nice bit of character

+1 on what f17bad and sound illusion said. on some cars yes on some cars no. and when you tip salty water on to rust it it looks a bit rubish. and i know the car you mean soundillusion. looks pretty terrible

I think you can just about get away with it on lower spec mk2's, its a waste of a good mk2 gti and anything newer is just wrong.

I like the notion of a rusty ratty shell of a car with beautiful interior and a great engine. Appearances can be very deceiving - it's what's inside that counts  :nerd:
