Gonna have to spend £1200 on my baby.
« on: 22 July 2012, 01:19 »
So, my 40k service has arrived & the dreaded message has popped up on the display of my Golf GT TDI 140 informing me I need it done in 800 miles... I do 325 a week, uh oh.

So a quote from VW, £960 for major service plus new Cambelt/tensioner/water pump & front pads/disks. I also know that I need 2 new tires very soon. (Close to legal limit) I can sort this myself but it will still cost me £100 per tire for a Goodyear Eagle F1.

I am in a position where I can switch my car now for yes haters gonna hate a Citroen DS3 which is less than a year old with 8k on the clock. Ironically this will cost me only a grand more than getting this 40K service done. The DS3 diesel is £0 road tax, £200 cheaper on insurance & pulls 20 more MPG. It will save me £70 a month in running costs alone for the sake of 1 second slower in the sprint to 60. But do I want a French car, probably not. But then again it's loaded with spec & not poverty spec like most Golfs.

Please help me get this temptation out my head.

Why are you paying dealer prices? My local VAG specialist charges £45/hr and knows more about these cars than the dealers do. Shop around my friend - you should get be able to reduce this by around 30% or more.

Cheers for the advice. I'll do just that, I really like my Golf but don't want to be stung by these ridiculous costs.

Are dealer stamps not worth it then?

Not as much as they used to be - if you go to a reputable specialist then you will still keep your warranty.

You ain't gonna get 20+mpg more out of a DS3. The 140 VAG engine is superb on economy if driven carefully -  you will need to thrash the DS3 to get similar performance (it's not all about 0-60) which will reduce it's fuel economy.

Changing to the newer car may seem like it's going to save you money in the short term, but after spending money on your Golf now, you will know you have got a good car under you for a good few years.

Your Golf will have done all it's depreciating, whereas the value of the Citroen will drop like a stone. If you buy the Citroen, in a couple of years time, it'll be out of warranty, worth bugger all and the chances are, it will need big money spending on it. The Golf on the other hand, may also need some money now and again, but at least it will be worth something.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Fantastic advice from the both of you. Thank you guys. Yes i've looked at the costs long term and i'd be much better off just getting this 40k service over and done with. You're actually right about the engine being superb on economy, I tried driving it carefully on the way back home from work today and managed 63.1 MPG over 32 miles, which is actually my new record, haha. Even higher than the claimed combined cycle.
