daily mk3 8v
« on: 13 July 2012, 18:12 »
Well,

I've ditched the mk5 and put the funds towards my camper.  But I need a daily for work and needed something cheap n cheerful. So here it is:

96 N Reg 8v GTI with 100,000 on the clocks.

Body work is pretty good considering...needs a good polishing as light surface scratches around it but it was a punt.  Hopefully not gonna regret it
Only mods are the coilovers which are wound down far to much...sitting on its arse aint in it, and they are not damping adjustable so harsh at the mo.  Its also running spacers courtesy of Novak Kustom Industries. Refurb on the early mk3 GTI 'le mans' wheels, with crackle paint and polished lip and some Chuff yellow on the lower fogs before i picked it up but not seen on these pics

Pics first:

And comments or laughs welcome

Nah dont know him...bought it off him.  Please dont tell me anything bad bout him  :undecided:  Woulda liked his mk1 off him if funds weren't tight but a 4 speed box would never work for me on the motorway anyway

Plans wise...a machine polish and get the dings out...definitely raising it up as i like the way its sitting on the spacers...just dont wanna roll the arches.  I've gotta either source a standard airbox, or get a new bracket for the K&N thats in there are the mo.  Bracket was snapped but easy fix.  Gonna service it, as its indeterminate when it was last done.  So new oil, oil filter, engine flush?? maybe? clean the throttle body as a little lumpy sometimes and some new sparks.  Plus a bloody new headunit as I cant live without my iPhone connection anymore...too many tunes and a single cd slot just doesnt do it

Does look nice and has a nice stance. Apart from the chav paint on the wheels (I'm old) and the lowness - agree it needs raising for a daily.

I wouldn't flush the engine. Buy a cheap synthetic oil and filter (they have the best detergents etc) and drop that out after 2,000 miles or so for a good synthetic and a new filter. The oil will work like a flush but won't be so aggressive and possibly cause seals to fail. The oil pick up in the sump might be worth doing as well, these can fail on older cars and that can cause major damage.

A nice looking Mk3 - congratulations.

And don't mind the lack of power - you have useable torque where you need it - and a careful right foot can see almost diesel like consumption figures (my best is 51.2 mpg over a 225 mile motorway journey).

Been seeing good mpg. Better than my old 8v. Had a P 96 from one yr old so know all about the thrills of the AGG engine    good daily tho and hopefully solid. Time will tell.

Manchester Gumtree. Shell weren't that great but all the running gear had been sorted when it needed to be. Stack of receipts etc. 4 owners and 138,000. Maybe break it?
