On my mk2 16v, the box feels lovely and direct, even though it's done about 50k more than my 8v, any idea why this would be, and would a mk2 16v box fit ok to the 8v, as I was also considering this option?

Hi mate,

I would try changing all of the gear linkages first. Its a common problem that you struggle to get first and second when they are worn,

I did this on mine and is as good as new.

Code: [Select]

If you have an older golf you might not have a weighted shift rod so I would get one as it makes the throw a lot smother.

Already done sir, but I like the weighted shift rod idea - many thanks.  New linkages did tidy up the stirring the rice pudding feeling, but now 1st is awful to get, and 2nd when cold too, but I know that's normal, all 4 of the mk2s I've had have had the crunch into 2nd when cold.  Do you know if a 16v box would fit though?
