Help me I aint got much oil in. options.
« on: 02 July 2012, 23:12 »
I knew I was slowly losing oil from the cam chain tensioner gasket but after a momentously rough weekend have just looked at the level...........feck. just above min mark. No spare in the boot and I'm 35miles from home. She has quantum platinum 10w40 in atm.

My question is....do I risk driving home with the level as it is, then top up with oil from vw?
Or
Do I use this as a get by, until the end of the week then fix the leak and change the oil?
Or
Top up with this then change the oil straight away (bearing in mind the leak will still be there.)

I would hope I can just top up with this until the end of the week.

Please help before something breaks

My thoughts exactly. Just wondered if I can get away with using this for a week until my parts arrive.

i would top it up with correct oil mate as the wrong oil could cause further problems get the repair sorted and then do full oil change better to do things correctly rather than spend more later on down the line

^^This 100% using the wrong oil now could lead to more problems in the future.

How could running ur car on bare minimum oil b possibly worse than putting some sort of oil in at all? Just curious that's all.

15w 40 isnt recommended for the golf (doesnt even say on the bottle if its semi or fully synthetic
5w 30 or 40 fully synthetic is recommended

As said, some oil is better than not enough oil. If it's just above the minimum mark then it's needing some oil and in the absence of any other oil, I'd put the Total in. I presume as you're talking about cam chain tensioner that you're talking about a 1.8 petrol, so at least you're not going to be hit with PD engine cam issues.

It's a 1.8T - putting the wrong oil in could cause big issues with the turbo
