I have had to 1.8 se one 96 and the other 97 and both had it in if you look at the spec of the se it's pretty much the same as the GTI:
Drivers adjustable Seat
Trim
Silver dials
Electric windows so on
The only difference I found was it is a SPI and a 1.8
So your saying the looms may be there ? I'll have a door card off to check or is there a better
Way to check ?
They will not be there......
To get the loom out things I remove are, lower dash trim, glovebox, clocks, centre console.
