Short shifter help
« on: 11 June 2012, 23:47 »
I've used the search feature but to no avail.
My problem is,my gear linkage is sloppy, select gears 90% of the time ok,but every now and then it clunks due to play.
I've already replaced the whole gear linkage with a 2nd hand one, worked better than what was in originally but I was told a quick shifter kit would eliminate anymore play.
Question is will this solve my sloppy gear stick?
If so,what is the best/worst makes to go for as I've seen some for 35quid delivered.
Any help/info or experience would be much appreciated

might just need the linkage adjusting as in this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp9ggefOjAE

forge or compbrake shifters do the job and are adjustable, I think there may be a TT linkage thats shorter as well.

Something that really helped my shifts was new engine mounts. Have you checked yours for play?

I must have a older style gear linkage as mine is different to one in video.mine is a 98plate (s reg) and it doesnt have the same parts, components as the one in the video, not even the spring bit at the gear box end is the same.
Any more ideas?

Quick update, adjusted the position as described in the video link, was easy enough to access without taking anything out, moved the nut forward about 2mm and cudnt select 1st gear.moved it back about 1mm and same,so it's back in its original position as far back as it can go and I'm still stuck where I started off.
If anyone has any more ideas I'd love to hear them.
