Engine Replacement

Running a 1.8t AUM and the engine is getting a bit long in the tooth, so looking at options to keep the old girl on the road.... ie change out the lump.
Basic long block exchange rebuilds look anywhere around £1300, so considering a low mileage 1.8t from the VAG range.  Which engines are a straight bolt up with the minimum of fuss?  I can obviously keep manifold and ancillaries etc and will team all this up with a fresh turbo too. 
I'm not looking at this in terms of some super power project, but if a BAM or other uprated motor can go in without me having to fanny around too much then I'll certainly consider that.
I'm waiting for a lock-up to come through and thinking I might like to tackle this job myself!.....

Why not go for an AUQ you would need the matching ecu as well.

I web through the options and in the end I just rebuilt my engine.

Here was my though process:
Refurbished engine: not uprated - not all the bits I want replaced in a rebuild would be done and there's the possibility that the worksmanship might be questionable.

Low mileage engine: don't know if the engine was bed in properly, maintained properly or mistreated.

Cheers lads.  I've had similar thoughts myself.  AUQ is a possibility, but depends what is about when I start shopping.  If I get the ECU will it need programming to my clocks etc?
Will only Golf engines be a straight swap into a Golf?  Will another VAG lump mate up to my gearbox and manifolds etc?

Not sure.  I know AUQ is also a K03s.  If there's one around at the time its a definite possibility.  Are the 1.8t long blocks all the same format for ancillaries etc?

I'm quite fond of the old girl now and this is all in aid of me keeping it and prolonging the agony enjoyment of ownership

I was told they are different but if not where does the extra 30bhp come from (is it the map ?)
