Chuck the 8v in the bin and replace with an abf. Can be done for a few hundred £ if done yourself and will outperform an expensively rebuilt 8v in every measure

ABF is an engine code from the MK3. I would recommend holding out for a lower mileage 8v and put the 600 quid you would put into engine build into a good solid car.... aka a 16v

Yep you could buy a complete 2.0 16v abf mk3 for less than 500, and there's everything you need for the conversion, including better gearbox and hydro clutch etc. Labour costs are the most expensive thing on a golf, so if you can do stuff yourself you can make an awesome car for a good price.. If you have to pay 600/1200 for a 110bhp 8v engine to be cleaned up then its bad times I'm afraid!!

Plus if I was throwing in a ABF i would be tempted to go for a good solid driver and stiffen her up with plating etc and then ABF

Best advice is dont even worry about it and get on with buying a Mk2 lol. Even a poorly looked after engine will do big miles and replacement second hand engines are cheap and plentifull. As said, an ABF can be swapped in if your after power (not as straightforward as some people claim but pretty easily nonetheless) but if your 1.8 does go bang, you can also drop a Mk3 8V engine straight in by swapping over all the bolt on bits that come with the Mk2 and no further modifications. My own 8v is currently just over 165k and still going strong. Be a LOT more worried about the condition of the shell and buy primarily on that.

By 'bolt on bits' you're referring to the head as a bolt on bit, I guess?

Injector locations aren't the same.

600 is about the cheepest your going to get a motor properly rebuilt  that is engine presented out the car,  for a decent build you cant actualy do them cheeper imo

If the engine turns up fitted prices go out the window as 20yr old cars hide draggons and since you faults are a pain in the arse  hence if doing one at work its priced to replace everything that can possobly wear,

But in general terms  gti motor in out  you should be abel to find someone to do it for 150quid  and another100 in oils coolants and associated crap,  getting engines done on exchange is best bet tho  send  them in turn key get them back turn key  quick easy swap then
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
