Worth a try

report back with your findings.

Reporting back as requested...
I have to admit that the idea seemed a little strange, but I appreciated the theory behind it, leather strap and all that!
Had a few teething  problems to start with, but if I persevere for long enough, Im sure I'll recoup many wasted pounds that have vanished on new and unnecessary blades
Here are my results... excuse the little nicks, but my skin is silky smooth.

I switched to DE shaving. Blades work out to around 15-30p each and I get three shaves out of each one (ie a week). That works out to around £15 per year.

Nope.

My philips is 10 years old and still gives me a smooth face every morning. No messing with foams or stropping on arms (or denim) required.

Shaving is for pussies. In more ways than one. Grow a beard you wimps!

I don't think a semi will give the same results

I am old enough that double edge blades (the Gillette 'Safety Razor' - LOL @ that) was the only option when I started.

Like colour TV vs B&W, cable vs telephone modems and my PC vs a Sinclair ZX80 - there is no going back. I have enough scars on my face for a 'weathered' look as it is...

My Philips is around 9 years old now and only showing signed of giving up, probably need to add a drop of oil down the rotor, which it hasn't had in 5+ years

One day I'll get a straight blade and see how quickly I slit my throat shaving all bleary eyed

Simple technique, strops have been used for millennia to sharpen razors...

I use boots twin blade razors (not cheapo plastic one), half the price and rinse clear with one swoosh under the tap.
last twice as long as major brands too

Gillette developed a coating which made the blades last for months and months, this was however not used for obvious reasons

A real beard.  Not some sculptured aussi style facial hair or a la de da moustache.
