can i not just swap the 8v ecu for 16v then reprogram it? instead of tracking down a new transponder and chip?

Do you have a 8v currently with an immobiliser?
If so, then yes...you fit the 16v engine, loom and ECU and 'adapt' the ECU/Immobilisers so that match.

I don't believe so. The Mk4 uses a more secure form of coding.

The Mk4 immobiliser is in the clocks IIRC, so you will need to run them, or have the immobiliser defeated in the ECU by one of the remapping specialists.

Yep, had an issue with a friends.. wouldn't start without the clocks

mk 4 needs immob defeat.. immobiliser is in the ECU not the clocks but.....

if your transplanting to another mk4 it needs clocks to match it as theirs a further twist to the tail as they have to be either immob 2 or immob 3  (clocks and ECU)  can't mix and match.. Immob 3 started in 2001

you can match any immob 2 clocks to any immob 2 ECU on Vagcom (full)  as iv done so..  its a bit more difficult matching up Immob 3
