The heavy steering doesn't bother me and I think a MK1 with power steering would feel strange.
I was driving the girlfriends Rover (now ex girlfriend) over the last few months. That's got power steering and I hate it. I got the cab out of the garage last week and it felt so much better to drive

Thanks for all your replies guys. I got a 1983 1800 GLi Cabrio about 4 months ago and you are right, the steering is not an issue. It is a delight to drive.
