Ticking noise
« on: 23 April 2012, 13:35 »
Hi everyone

I was just wonder, when my car gets warm or been standing in traffic for awhile there seems to be a bit of a ticking noise.
Is this normal? If not does anyone know what it could be?

Thanks

It could well be the cam tensioner.

Im having the same problem with mine

But on the flipside, our engines do sound loud and ticky anyway!

I get this after ragging the sh!t out of it on the way home.... can always here something clicking which sounds like the exhaust or something cooling down. Used to happen in the R32 and the GTi so nothing to worry about I would say

Just back in first GTi since my Mk 2 8v of many years ago, now driving 2006 MK 5 GTi DSG and loving it.

Only had this car a month, didn't notice on test drive but ticking at idle became increasingly apparent and began to bug me. It goes away with any revs & runs very sweetly otherwise. I've had the same engine in previous cars & never noticed it.

I sought several opinions to put my mind at ease (I have been known to obsess over small things...) :

1) Local garage - didn't know, wanted to replace cambelt & tensioners
2) VW Main dealer 1 - just stuck head under bonnet to be fair, it wasn't booked in, not a proper check over - "just a noisy engine".
3) Garage linked to dealer I bought it from - "it's the injectors, it is just a noisy engine" - no issue.
4) VAGtech - again, some of these engines can be noisy, plugged it in for check, recommend check TSB (Technical Service Bulletins) with VW particularly around manifolds.
5) Booked it into VW main dealer no 2 for proper diagnostic (£78) - no issue, some of the engines can be noisy, nothing found.

So, after all that, I'm comfortable there are no issues & nothing to be done or that can be done. I will try 98 Ron to see if it makes a difference plus keep a close eye/ear on it & make sure it is topped up with the right oil. Otherwise I move on.

I thought it was just me, my last car was vastly different and pretty much silent.

Cheers

The TFSi is a loud engine, ticking is always apparent. One of the lads on another forum mentioned a friend said his sounded like a diesel.

As long as the services are kept upto date and no issues are found on the vagcom then nothing to worry about.

I actually bought my own lead and vagcom to do fault checking and also option changes....just puts your mind at rest.

Thanks guys, it helps a lot.
My car is very well looked after so it must just be me being paranoid.

@PenguinGTI- That's the exact noise but will have to look for the puppets later
