suspension trouble

hay all when driving car feels like in dance all over the place  . when i jacked the front up i could lift wheels an suspension up an down!!! does this mean my top mount have gone? am saving up for coilover as need lowering but just need to no will i need to get new top mounts as well.

its all ways best to replace your top mounts when you get coilovers anyways man.

and it does sound like your top mounts have gone yes.

It is normal for the suspension to drop down when the car is lifted. Remember that it will drop down the same distance there is from the top mount plate to the top of the suspension turret.

Check this video out. It's WRONG as one of the comments clearly says

THIS IS NORMAL, try turning your wheel to one side and check the top plate again, it will be AT AN ANGLE, and the space is made so that the top plate doesnt rub on the body while turning !!
If you think your strut mount if bad because of that, then ALL VW from the dealer come with bad strut mount then..

The time to change the top mounts is when they start knocking when going over potholes and bumps, or when he car feels very "wobbly", although that could be other things too.

cheers mate. its a bit wobbly plus there a knocking every time i go over potholes etc from front an back so will get hold of some top mounts an new coilover an see if that helps. cheers

Install the new top mounts and new coillies at the same time. And remember to set the coils a bit higher for the first few hundred miles at least to let the ride height settle. Also remember that lowering it too much will ruin handling (if wishbones are past the horizontal point)

yer will do mate an cheers. not looking at lowering to much as will have trouble with driveway lol. but might stick around 50-60m. got mot in july so will need it all sorted befor then ha. cheers for help mate

i would also check other components like arb bushes, bearings etc when changing the suspension over as you may find it to be more than just the top mounts causing an issue.
