The more crumple outside of the survival cell the better as it will absorb the energy much more efficiently. If you see the 1997 mondeo you can see the survival cell crumpling, the pillar above the door bends and more energy is transferred to the people inside. On the 2007 mondeo you can see the survival cell remains intact, and you can see the roof rippling as the energy is channeled around the people inside rather than through them.
