Do you have large tonsils? Someone on embarrassing bodies a couple of weeks ago had the same symptoms as you and it was due to having large tonsils, when you lie on your back they block your nasal passage causing you to breath through your mouth

Never measured them

But I have trouble breathing through the nose sitting down, standing, lying and any other position.

I spoke to my friend who had his adenoids removed and he said he had the same symptoms as me. When breathing through the nose it felt like he was breathing through a straw, like the lungs are trying very hard to get air in but the passage is too narrow. He also said he had the same problems at night when sleeping, and still does but due to him being used to breath through his mouth. I've tried breathing through my nose continuously but I just felt asphyxiated after a few breaths, so had to take a big gulp of air from mouth. More and more I think about it, and especially after speaking to him, I'm starting to think adenoids. Will be in touch with my GP on tuesday to book an appointment to diagnose something.

i don't know if it will help but maybe a humidifier will stop you having such a dry mouth?

It may work, but the problem lies with me rather than with the ambiance, so rather than mask the problem I'd like to fix it completely. As I said, I feel like I'm breathing in through a straw when I use my nose. If someone was to duct tape my mouth I would eventually asphyxiate.

If it shifts between being blocked on one side, then the other, it sounds like a deviated septum.

Deviated septum. Might be this...quite common as one side branches off leading to virtually blocked nasal passage causing reliance on the other. Stress sounds a factor too TBH and some deep breathing circular stylee should help?

Not that it's the best resource by you get the picture...http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasal_septum_deviation#section_2

Simple op but benefits don't start till 2month after surgery N and it's an open wound so minimum of 2 weeks off work (or longer if it's me!)

Either way get to the docs...they'll send you to a specialist to have a proper butchers up there. Something's not right :undecided:

Cheers dtea, nice informative reply. Doubt it's stress, I've never felt stressed over something tbh, always had a calm and tranquil approach to things.

Will call doctors on tuesday as I said, and try and get something diagnosed.

Nope, after a drink of water and a brush of the teeth I'm good as gold.
