Service report

Right guys some advise really.

Just had a service done at stealers, and they have pointed out several items which need doing sometime, so of course I'm asking for your specialist opinions.
1. battery - failed their test, they said £130! but can i just go somewhere else to get it done or does it have to be VW brand?
2. xenon lights need adjusting every 4 years, at extra cost?

I've never adjusted my xenon lights and it's passed the mot on two occassions.

As xenon, well i was thinking that too as its passed MOT as well, it was part of the service, but he said it was a schedule every 4 yrs..?! Any excuse to get £70 off you.

Also forgot to mention air box needs replacing, as that just case of buying box, and change yourself as they want £260.! think i read somewhere on here its part of engine cover, i might do a search on this forum.

What about time passing means the lights need adjusting?

Before buying a battery, open the battery cover (a single plastic tab) and look at the capacity and CCA, that one above looks a bit big. Mine was 72ah and 640A.

I changed for a 60ah 480A one, saving 2/3kgs.

(Your car may have a winter pack/sunroof/xenon and actually have a big battery).

Well i'm not sure what time has to do with adjustment..that was a new one, i figured as it passed MOT it must be some made up task, the report says : advise basic setting of xenon lights, due every 40k.?!

As for the airbox, it just says air cleaner housing broken, has been glued, require new air housing. I can see a crack which goes up to the end of the cover?

You can do basic setting of the xenon headlights with vcds but should only be needed if you change a headlight housing or after an accident.

thanks all, managed to get bosch s5 battery, it was £85..nearly as much as VW, but its 5yr warranty and decent spec. now the ignition turn is much better/quicker  . Think that was the most helpful comment they made, as they said it was knackered. now with the broken airbox, is just that damage i posted pic of and assume they were being over cautious in getting me to change it and part with some dosh, judging by the xenon comment.

I work for Audi and previously Vw I've never heard of headlamp adjustment being chargeable before due to being in the service schedule and should be done as part of the service, but in all fairness it's a check of the headlamp aim which only ever needs adjusting if it's had a bump of a new headlamp as said before. As regards to the air box unless it's not sealing correctly and bringing eml lights on, that to me looks cosmetic but might be cheaper to get an induction kit.
