I also have a 2005 leon which we have had from new its build is superior imo, its paint is far superior, its engineering fit and finish superior. Its brakes also have more feel and more progressive. Granted it does not corner, handle or go as well but at least its painted and undersealed. Infact im having trouble deciding if i have to get rid of one which one of the two to sell!
I have always been a die hard VW/Audi/SEAT/Skoda fan and the family has been since the start of the 80s (Audi & VW) but sadly VW won't be on any of my family members shopping list from now on. I am going to look at a new Audi A1 this or next weekend though (depending on time available) to replace our Ibiza.

Hmmm you see with joe boggs driving it i don't think it would dust the R, no doubt it would be a better experience and feel.

Ive buried 1 into next week that drives round here............ Doesn't corner any better at all... And soon as the duel carriageway came after the round about i was gone,

BTW  mkviken im just being Devil's Advocate because all you seem to do is slag off your Gti and Vw but you paid your money so you have got that right lol  i don't really care which is faster.

Ford Focus ST lover, explains it all. The GTI is an altogether different kind of car which you don't get.
One thing I don't get though. If so much is wrong with your car why have you not had VW fix it. If VW wont fix it why not get an independent report done.

Can you please explain that ?

The Focus ST is a great driving car but personally I would be extremely embarrassed being seen climbing out of one. The body kit is horrendous and I don't think I have ever seen a ford focus st past without a full blown over sized sub woolfer in full swing.

i didn't mention ST. the ST is the GTI class car - the RS is what i very nearly bought and is a totally different animal. and as for the sub woofer thing they add weight and slow you down so not my cup of tea.

as for the VW vs the world thing - i will say it again - our 4 year old, never garaged, dog and baby taxi of a focus zetec has less rattles and squeaks than my £27k, fair weather, always garaged 5 month old gti.

as for VW fixing the problems I've had - i wouldn't let them loose on my interior trying to fix rattles. ive solved most myself without damaging anything. the paint defects are common - i know of a member on here who had bumpers painted under warranty as they're went done properly. i don't want my car thu a main dealer body shop so thats a non starter for me.

the one time they did 'fix' a problem my car came back worse, which is an ongoing saga with me and the dealership.

mechanically the car has been perfect so far so can't fault it in that respect.

Because most if not all the dealers in the north east are crap with a capital F. Mine went in for rattles to be fixed and i had to visit 4 more times for them to repair the damage they caused when they were unable to fix the rattles!! (Even though i told them how too ) (Did i also say there fix for the damage they did was laffable and shoddy does not cover it) This cost me in time and wages so i gave up as it would just turn into a weekly visit!
Why are dealer techs so rubbish because its all done on a faster is better basis, dealer techs are monkeys (I know my family setup a large dealership chain many years ago so delt with them regular) and one of the larger dealership chains in the northeast employs the lads thrown out of schools to look good to the goverment, But they don't care or have a passion for cars or know anything or have many common sense brain cells they don't care about customers cars all they care about is been paid. There higher ups don't care either (Amazing what you hear when you have people on the inside)
VW customer care don't care learnt that one when i first bought the car.

Cost and time and VWuk ignore it, some people have lives and more important things to sort out and deal with than a shoddy built car from a manufactuer who does not give a damb.. (I wasted months dealing with VWuk.)
VW have a reputation and people fall for it. Take off the rose tinted glasses and start looking more closley at there cars from an engineering point of view rather than there touchy feely interior plastics and they have cut corners left right and centre. Its shocking, guess they have to do something to pay those high wages of union run employees in Germany. Most people prob don't care or look as we are a nation of people without any practical or engineering skills and so a pencil pusher would not know about anything but toucht feely plastics.
Have a look also at the Mk5 section on here and on the other site. Many are suffering rusting wings on a car less than 5 years old, thats high VW quality for you.

I don't like Renaults so to me this is a non starter. I spent 10 years fixing PSA cars at a specialists and many renaults too so no french cars for me thank you.

I have met mkviken and seen his GTI a couple of times. His GTI imho is superior to mine in paint, fit and finish and has far less rattles but then his is a year and a half younger than mine and a colour that hides a multiple of sins mine doesn't. He also seems to have suffered from another dealership group round heres high standards of work though.

Fair enough snoopy I sympathise.
I feel the same with Audi. I had to fight tooth and nail to get a fix which was under £200 on a brand new A3 Sport 4 weeks old. Eventually got trading standards involved. Of course I could afford the £200 fix but why should I when it was a brand new car. There attitude absolutely stinks in after care service. Audi Uk were terrible also. Too many Audi's are company cars and that's part of there problem. Ever time I went into Audi it was which company Mr Colville.
Will never touch audi with a barge poll.
When the time came to sell the A3 I thought I would go along and see what Audi would give me in part exchange so I knew what kind of money to get for it.
After visiting the Audi garage I went to a VW garage who offered 1,500 more than the Audi garage.
The other thing that bugged me with Audi was you have to pay for everything. An Arm rest is considered extra at well over a £100.00.
Audi left a bad taste in my mouth.

Feel better now that's off my chest.

I'm going to test drive the new BMW 1 125i M Sport. I like the fact they now do fixed price servicing and store your winter wheels but best of all you don't need to pay for an arm rest

I'm just being honest. can't see the point in looking with rose tinted specs and saying everything about the gti is wonderful when the paint finish is a joke, the interior rattles and the brakes must be the germans idea of a sick joke.

Got to agree.
My Mk3 has interior plastics that are lasting better than my 2 year old Mk6...and the Mk3 is 15 years old.
The paint on the Mk6 is pathetically thin (where it is painted) and chips too easily.
The brakes can be made to fade on the public road, on a standard car with standard tyres - pathetic.
It's a good all rounder...but far from perfect. And at £30k...it should be better.

back on topic though the R26.R would be in my top 10 garage (along with 2 other clios!)

I'd have one Clio in my dream garage - a Trophy.
..and an Integra Type-R (DC2)...yes, a cheap and tacky Japanese car. OMG!!

good lad!

DC2 and clio trophy (and a williams) in my garage too!

Let's see if you still have the rose tinted spectacles on 2 years from now.  :lipsrsealed:

VW would have you believe you are buying some unobtanium plated piece of rocking horse excrement...in affect, you aren't.
It's only a Golf. A mass produced hatchback.
And not immune to problems or niggles.

Do I like mine? Yes.
Is it prefect/great? No. Far from it.
Sadly, there is nothing I'd rather own instead...but perfect it is not...and with the current price, it should be better.

Why do people on here get so defensive and try to prove how fabulous the golf is every time someone dares to say a differ car is good?

Like I said I like my car and appreciate its good points which There are many but I'm not foolish enough to think its something it isn't or a super car in disguise and built like the shuttle.

Do yourself a favour and have a look inside the front and rear wheel wells and tell me the paint isn't peeling. Have a look where the rear numberplate lights are and tell me the whole bumper has paint on it.

Have a look under the bonnet and tell me the inner rails are fully painted the have a look down the side of the car and tell me it isnt orange peel.

Have a look at the rear control arms and tell me they're not rusting.

And how many mk5s are rotten already and the mk6 is made even cheaper.

These things are NOT any better built than the next car.

Have a look at the load tie down points in the boot. Painted? I bet not...sort of oversprayed at best.

Mother's Skoda Fabia is painted in places my GTI isn't.

To be fair, my Tornado Red isn't orange peely...but mothers Fabia has a better paint finish.
As did my Fabia vRS.
And both resist stone chips better than my GTI.

Oh, and how come the chrome finish on my standard VW wheel centre caps have got white worm corrosion?
They did 15 dry miles before the wheels were taken off, and stored in wheel bags, on my wheel rack.
They corrrode in a dry garage? WTF???
