Looking at getting a MK4 some advice please...

Hi All,

New hear, I am about to replace my car and I am looking at a MK4 Golf GTI. I was wondering if you could all give me some pointers?

Firstly what insurance group does the GTI fall into? And any 21 year olds what do you pay on insurance?

What is the cost of tax?

What should I look out for? avoid?

Any other advice bearing in mind I have about £1500 or less!

and the 1.8t where insurance group 14.. but they changed now from groups 1-50 so dont know falls into now..

Insurance groups do not matter so much these days, age and experance of driver, area etc matter more.

After speaking to a couple of different insurers. Different insurance companys have different insurance groups, hence why they have such different prices.

I'm 21 with admiral, 2 claims, 1 years no claims, 6 points just outside london, 1650quid. Mods declared.

as for insurance ide say 600-900

then if you mod it a few hundred more

Most the quotes here seem reasonable, I was paying £1900 a year for a 1.4 polo at 18 so I can't complain about my insurance on he golf now

Why not just get a quote yourself?

Noone else here has exactly the same circumstances as you. Getting your approximate figures off people who live in sleepy little villages will lead you into a false sense of security.

When you buy it and get hit with *BZZZzT* £3330 squids per year. Becuase you live in a part of the country that's always on fire.


All I will say is, play about with the quote changing all the variables you can. It makes a silly difference.

21, 4 years driving experince but only 1 years no claims (due to being named driver for other 3 years  )

£899 with Elephant and parents as named driver

Have added a few mods over time so its gone up a little but not much 

for example adding new alloys cost £6

31 year old, and my lass as a driver with licence less than 3 year old, and im paying less than 500.

1500 should get you a half decent golf, they've really dropped in value recently (typically, just after id bought one)

checking tailgate wash hasnt been leaking, check the boot lock with the key to see if it works as usually this buggers up, and check that the dash says boot is open so you know switch works

check to see interior lights come on when doors are opened, if they dont its the lock mechanism and they cost about 70 quid each

serviced with correct oil, essential on any car, especially with a turbo.
