fuse keeps blowing, urgent
« on: 19 February 2012, 12:39 »
hi guys after some help if possible. fuse 21 keeps blowing, am i right in thinking thats the sunroof & central locking ? well i presume so as they are what doesnt work when its blown.

it had a 15 fuse in it which was blown when i got the car, replaced it and all was good for about 2 days. blew again.
so, tried a bigger fuse, as soon as the contacts touched it blew, tried another one and that blew. there just blowing as soon as it touches the fusebox.

any ideas on what could cause this ? massive pain in the ass with the central locking not working. my boot only locks using the central locking so my car is not secure without it working.

any ideas would be great guys, cheers

Its obviously shorting out somewhere. You'll need to trace the wiring back, and see if you have exposed core anywhere touching to earth, or any other wires. Something may have snagged somewhere, or the insulation has melted together on something.

thanks for the reply:) okidoke, where would you think is best to start looking ? central locking wiring ?

only thing im thinking is, is it the boot causing a problem maybe ? as it doesnt manually lock, only with central locking. like the key physically wont turn in the lock.

Have a look at the plug connection to the central locking pump. Its located under the O/S rear light.

Damp can get in and cause problems with them.

The boot lock problem will be unrelated...........

yeah the central locking is really funny sometimes...my driver's side door would not lock unlock via key one morning...drove around and then it decided to work...i'm sure it is due to dampness...now my boot lock wont unlock using a key (wont even turn the lock) yeah it's not related, but hey welcome to the joys of owning a volkswagen...!This is why the Germans' tanks froze outside of Stalingrad...they just can't design a proper electrical system!!

the locking assembly on the boot may possibly be corroded up, hence why key wont do anything, also when you check your central locking pump out. if its damp take the rears light cluster out and make sure its not rusted out and water is getting in. had this problem with mine when i first got it.

also might be worth checking drivers door, as its common for the loom to suffer with the repeated open/close.
You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.
