Hi, i have had my golf since feb and i have a budget of about 2000 - 2500 to spend on a new engine, now i have looked in all mags and web sites and to be honest the best one i have come up with is a bored out 1.8 8v with a cam and gas flowed head! does anyone know of anywhere which could do a better conversion for this kind of cash, i wanted a 1.8 t but that seems to be double the cost of what i have, oh and i am that great with a spanner!
cheers rob

What about a 16v conversion  :undecided: That should be about that price to buy and install, and a 16v in a mk1 will be rapid.  :undecided: Don't forget you'll also need to uprate the rear brakes so you need to budget for that too. A 1.8Twill be double that price deffo.  Not sure which companies could do the conversion though, try JBS autodesigns in Chesterfield, they feature in the Golf+ quite a bit.  Also have a look at the links on the golfgti.co.uk home page as there are a load of companies on there.
......now officially dubless.

i heard that the 16v engine is a totally different beast to the 8v and i quite like the low down grunt i have at the mo, has anyone had a bored out 1.8 fitted? whats it like? or is the 16v really the best route?

The 16v has as much low down grunt as the 8v and don't let anyone tell you any different, look at the graph below.  I think I've heard before that if you want more torque then you need a 2ltr bottom end from a Passat or something.  :undecided: Might be best to pretend you want a conversion and speak to one of the tuning companies and get some information out of them on what is the best route to go etc, it'll only cost you a phone call.

Graph, this is for mk2 but you get the idea.

Jodie at Dubvelopments in Hereford is really good priced for engine conversions. He's gonna fit a 16v engine for me at the end of this year .

I bought a MK2 16v with Velly for £250. We are selling all the bits of it and keeping the engine and box. Hopefully we'll make our money back and I'll have a free engine and box. All I have to pay for then is the conversion

This topic is good timing! A mate of mine is going to drop a 1.8T into his Mk2 and as a result he's giving me his 16V 1.8 which is going into my Mk1 Cab. All the questions I was going to ask have been answered here.

Yup.

I just want to get to quarter of a million miles on my original engine first before I drop it out. Only 15,000 miles to go...

bronze, are you going to the Malvern event in July? It's near your neck of the woods?
