I gave up on my footwell lights as I just couldn't open the enclosures.

you mean the metal part? use a flat head screw driver and pry the sides up, dont be scared to bend them a little as they go back into shape pretty easy.

Did you manage to disconnect the passenger side though?

Yeah I could disconnect them no problem just couldn't get the bloody things open  :sad:

done it now, and pretty happy with the results - the bulbs been pretty much my first mods; footwell and headlights
