Clutch or Gearbox?
« on: 26 December 2011, 20:27 »
My mk4 1.8T is getting difficult to engage 2nd gear from cold start until I've done about half a mile. It's a 99 on 150K miles on orig clutch (no slip yet).

A sign of the clutch going or more expensive gbox troubles to come?

ps happy xmas.

Clutch may or help if worn but could be second gear synchro if it's only hard to engage second

High shift effort is typically a worn synchro cone. As oil gets round the box shift effort will reduce.

2nd is the gear that gets the most abuse, so it's not surprising that it wears first.

Its strange that poor selection is only an issue when cold, once I've done half a mile it's fine. I'm going to try changing the transmission oil and see if that helps. After 150k it'll be a nice treat for the old girl.
