If all you are after is a GPS speed camera detector as the one you listed from amazon you can get apps for iphone for free/very little that do the same. (If you have an iphone of course!)

Its worth noting that these only alert you of fixed cameras like a sat nav does.

The devices that detect radar are illegal in the this country although are still available on a few websites (foreign companies i believe like Snooper). Those devices are pointless as it only tells you off the radar once its already hit your car / pointed towards the car, by then its far to late.

you can still get a garage door opener/radar scrambler that scrambles the radar when it hits the car, it is legal as long as you have a reason for having it fitted, but you will end up in court if your found with one as you will have to prove a legitimate reason for having one, as they are not legal if the only purpose is to avoid speeding tickets.

they are for gates, garage doors, driveway lights, ect. to open/switch on whatever the receiver is fitted to, automatically, obviously scrambling radars was never the intention when it was made, it's just a great side effect.

Current cars 1995 Golf gti colour concept 2.0 8v 156,000 miles. bmw 316 1.9 129,000. yeah, life's good!

I DO!!

well for a couple of seconds after I hit them.... esp all the damage they could have done to the underside of the car. but then I remember its worth it to keep the streets clear.

I wondered when someone would point this obvious point out.

If you got stopped by the police (for something like a broken rear bulb or a random spot check) and they checked your record and found a radar detector in your car, you'd be in for trouble.
It's not worth it.
The majority of fixed speed cameras are on most sat navs, so if you're on unfamiliar roads, just turn it on and you'll get a warning (mine tells me when there's one upto 1km away).
If it's a cop with a radar gun or a "talivan" then you'll just have to leave it to a) your ability to spot it and b) luck.

I know what you mean about going from a 40 zone to a 30 zone.
Myself and my mum both got caught while driving in convoy because an unmarked police van was sitted over the brow of a hill where it went from 40mph to 30mph. I was caught at 34mph.

Well done on passing your test, not every experienced driver would be able to pass the test again without doing lessons.
Now just be sensible and enjoy driving.

I understand its not illegal if you forget to turn it off.. I can be very very forgetful!!

As an example sometimes I forget to even turn off the light, or flush the toilet, or go shopping on and evening, then playfootball on a weekend, and tomorrow I have arranged to meet my mate. Looking forward to it as we might be booking a snowboarding holiday tomorrow. Must not forget to polish my boots.

i got a TALEX for the wife.  it works by gps and tells you the speed limit and tells you off if you go over the limit. plus it has the fixed camera sites on it. it is up dated by the web. some times when you are on the motorway it tells you to slow down if you are in road works which have finished this is due to  me not up dating it.
