Rust is easy to spot on a Mk3.
If the jacking points are mashed, most probably has rust you can pull back the plastic back quite a bit so take a lenser type torch and check well.
Walk away unless it is clearly only minor, that part of the car gets really sprayed in the wet and fills up inside making the rot spread.
The rest is easy to spot.

A Mk3 GL doesn't have arch trims so you can check for rust, and it looks cooler in some cases.

Plus, you've then got a great excuse to start thinking about putting a gutsier engine in.

Aren't the gl small engines ? I'd rather buy a gti and take the arch trims off , that was my plan anyway

thanks for your help mate, yeah it was jus under the trims i was worried about really.
im lookiing at two mk3s soon with only 2 owners each and under 100K miles so should be pretty good
