Problem is the new corsa and fiesta both likely to have the same power as the GTI, those of you who say the gti doesn't compete against them are kidding yourselfs, both likely to be 9k cheaper:

As I've said above, power isn't the only factor to consider when thinking about what makes vehicles 'competitors'. Both the Corsa and Fiesta are superminis, the golf is a family hatch. That in itself not only brings practicality into the mix, but also the image of the vehicles. Now of course, those looking at the GTI as a performance car might also consider the hot Corsa and Fiesta models, but those who are looking at the GTI as a family car with performance ability will not be interested in the limited practicality of the smaller superminis. Likewise those who are attracted to the class and quality of GTI badge are not likely to be seduced by a Fiesta or Corsa.

And again, as I said above. There is also the VW Polo GTI, which does compete with the Corsa and Fiesta offerings.

It's not inconceivable that someone considering a Golf GTI might also look at Corsa VXRs and Fiesta STs (I myself considered a MINI Cooper S JCW), but being realistic the direct competitors to the Golf from both the Vauxhall and Ford stables are the Astra and Focus respectively.

Hold on a sec, the GTI is compared against the VXR/ST etc ? An icon classic, a refined symbol of motoring is up against 2 of the most f**king chavtastic cars around ? The only thing thats missing from them is the f**king burberry paint! And to whine and b!tch about it not having more BHP, is not what the GTI is all about, the GTI was never about how fast it is. If you want BHP go buy that big illuminous snotter RS.

f**k me, no wonder I dont come on here often anymore.

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

So instead of people buying a Focus ST they should all be buying Fiestas as they're cheaper, nothing to to with the fact they need a bigger car

Reading some of this thread I would say you have a valid point. Some just don't get what the Golf GTI is about.  Funny thing is most will want the new GTI when it comes out

I get exactly what the GTi is about - I own two and have owned 6 in my time.

The point I was trying to make before is that eventually there'll come a price point beyond which many people will just say enough is enough, I can no longer justify this price premium/underpower compared to competitors. I seriously believe the GTi is representative of the fact that the whole VW range is hugely overpriced. I'm a subscriber to Volkswagen Driver magazine and I'm staggered by the price of most new VWs these days when I look at the listings in the back.

Last month's major test was a Jetta Sport TDi - it costs £21090.
A Golf GT TDi 140 BMT is £22670
A Polo Match 1.4 85bhp is £14485 for God's sake.

Don't get me wrong, Fords and Vauxhalls are very expensive too but the only people to benefit in my view from these huge prices are genuinely premium marques like Jaguar, BMW, Mercedes etc. No matter what VW and their marketing men think, VW is definitely not a premium marque.

I didnt think my GTI was fast enough when i got it. Thats why i modified it almost straight away. Once it made 250bhp after the remap everything was how it should of been. Then i got bored again and went to 300bhp when before i could continue it got stolen.
I dont buy my car to ferry the kids around. Im  a customer who buys a car to get the most enjoyment possible out of it.

Each car caters to a different market. When looking at a car I like to cover the ground quickly but in a degree of comfort.

You obviously bought the car for the image history whatever. which represents a portion of the market the gti is aimed at. I on the otherhand bought it as a performence car to be driven fast. I represent another portion of the market along with all the others inbetween.
Now i speak for somebody who will buy a gti for how it drives. How quickly it covers ground A > B. I would not buy a MK7 GTI at 220bhp for 27k. Sorry but no.
Alot of you will buy it which will continue to say to VW that they can offer less for more.
