GOLF MK1 FUEL FILTER UNION
« on: 22 September 2003, 00:47 »
 ???
Hello all,
Help desperately needed, have changed the fuel filter on my Mk1, one side has sealed, the other will not
Have used new copper washers, torqued currectly
but keep getting a nice jet of petrol coming from between the front union and the washer.
Have tried 3 new washers. Doesn't seem to indent
uniformally.Has anyone got any suggestions is there a softer compound washer or aluminium.
There are no scratches on the union and it seems to tighten up uniformally.
Getting desperate (and smelly) petrol that is.

Any advice would be appreciated.

TIA

Are the washers that you are using the right size?,they should be a tight fit on the banjo bolt. Also make sure that the washer is not getting damaged as you tighten the bolt up. The other thing you could do is replace the copper washers with "dowty" washers, these are a metal sealing washer with a rubber seal in the middle and are used in high pressure applications. Use these all the time at work and find them a lot better than straight metal seals. Get them from any hydraulic specialist. Hope this helps, Steve.

Hi MK1,

Many thanks, will hunt down some dowty washers
and let you know the outcome.

Having thought about it a little more I think that the fuel filter
threads may not be at 90 degress to the face of the filter union.
The leak always appears at the top and the washer only shows
an indentation on say two thirds of is surface.
Hopefull the dowty washer will give me a little more tolerance.

Many thanks again

Hi MK1,

Found some dowty specs, do you know a part no
or diameter or whether the washers are self centrering.
The current washer's are approx 11.5 ID and 18 OD.
They take 100 bar pressure, just got to check this exceeds the CIS on the Golf.

Regards,

The washer should be a snug fit on the banjo bolt, dont know the part no. 100 bar is around 1450 psi :o, you will be ok as the cis system pressure is well below 100 psi. Could be on the right track with the filter, have had a odd one that you cant seal due to poor manufacture. Good luck, Steve.

Hi,

Got the filter from eurocar parts, depending on how I get on with
the Dowty washers and it still doesn't seal will check the filter carefully
for problems and return if faulty.
