Things I loved about my GTD DSG:
Nippy - great for city or motorway - great grip and stability - intuitive driving position and dashboard layout - comfortable supportive seats - roomy - easy to park
What I didn't like:
Odd rattles - road noise a bit intrusive - fuel consumption not as good as I was led to believe

Having test driven the Merc 250Cdi sport: (looking at second hand, but less than 8,000 on clock)
Things I liked:
Felt comfortable and handled well on motorway, responsive engine
What I didn't like:
Wouldn't like as town car - felt too big.  Rear vision a bit compromised. Media/satnav control behind left elbow (although there is voice control).  Dash lay out a little fiddly.  Horrible handbrake!! Road noise much greater than I would have expected from premium car, no audible parking sensor - just visual which means can't watch the road and parking sensor at same time (annoying), Diesel engine sounded like a tractor, Extremely condescending, patronising salesman!

So I think for me the Golf wins - perhaps it's just the familiarity - I feel at home in it.

Other half likes the Merc

Cleaned and tidied.

Back on topic please - Sunroof or ACC as Ann clearly won't be buying the used Merc.

i wouldn't get the sunroof one as they're really heavy and they take up head room

Less added weight than DSG...
Do they rob headroom? I'm 6'3" and could wear a hat in mine...so you'd have to be come kind of proper Gigantor to find the headroom lacking!

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Sunroof for me. Perfectly happy with the ride on mine without ACC.

I'm sure the weight of the sunroof will make absolutely no difference to the dynamics of the car during everyday driving. At 10-10ths on a track maybe, but for the daily slog, if there is a car available with one, I'd go for it.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

From Top Gear's road test of the GTD (http://www.topgear.com/uk/volkswagen/golf-6/road-test/gtd-3dr)................

>>
Talking of which, the GTD doesn't have GTI suspension, it has the normal Golf's ‘sport' alternative, which isn't as perky. If you pay for the adaptive damping option - and you should - the ride is good and the body control OK, but you have to fight your way through a layer of sog before you get it to show its cornering smarts.

And Ann, as you have said, you never opened the sunroof of your last car.

(of topic, but that Merc salesman.... disgusting!!)
Mk VI Black Pearl GTD.... No Frills, replaced a Black Pearl PD150 Bora, which in turn replaced a Dragon Green VR6 which followed a Dusty Mauve MK III 8v Gti.

Ann:
Fly high and get a GTI. Spec ACC and you've got one of the best road cars around.

Ha - well that's Top Gear for you.  I agree the GTD isn't really a hot hatch, but it looks good, performs well and I will say corners well.  Don't fancy the insurance the fuel costs that go with the GTI, although it is a beautiful car it isn't quite me.  (like the suspension just a bit soggy)

Have now put deposit on new car

It should arrive with the dealer next week.  Metallic Black, 5 door, 18" alloys, Sat Nav, Lux Pack, Parking Sensors, Sunroof and colour MFC (don't know why it should have the MFC in colour - a bit of a gimmick)

Am happy now

Thanks for help everyone!

Ann

Top Gear car reviews Golf GTD 12/20
                               Golf GTI 17/20
Do yourself a favour and move up to a GTI and specced with ACC this car is almost perfect.

Ok I now see you have ordered your new GTD, all the best when you get it, watch out for those pesky barstewards turning out in front of you
