hall sender has nothing to do with cooling, the hall sender sends a signal to the ecu to tell the coil to fire a spark. when the hall sender goes wonky its sends the signal at the wrong time. causing it to misfire splutter etc

it works on electromagnetic pulse

for 60 quid i'd change the whole distributor. they do tend to die over time.

thanks again fellas.
Hall sender has been fitted today, (i've just collected it from garage - I bottled doing the job myself!!) and it starts better, idels smoother, taking it out later so will let you knw!

Also its going back in on saturday moring for a new clutch cable, the one on it is a fairly new motor factors one, and it keeps slippling so I'm told, a genuine VW will sort it. Also I'm told the temp sender is effed, a motors factors copy makes it worse, so I'm also getting a genuine temp sender fitted on sat!

Cheers will let you know how things get on!

would the hall sender cause me cold start problems.  I have had a similar prob with the revs increasing etc.  Thought my clutch was slipping but its intermittent

its usually the opposite in that the car is really warm. the rev counter needle will actually bounce about all over the show rather just flucuate.

yours sounds more like a weak spark.

yeah changed the sprak plugs recently and the car has been crap at starting ever since.  trouble is i canged the fuel filter as well.  dunno what caused the problem tho but the revs do fluctuate. hmmmm
