I'd own one

Then again I've owned a Frontera :lipsrsealed:

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Maybe the boxster offers a completely different drive and ownership experience of the 911?

It does. I'm sure you know that too :-)
Boxster is the better handling car at first drive - the more natural...and properly brilliant to drive.

The 911 more edgy and scarey...both will swap ends if driven like a goon...the arse end of the 911 will go if provoked, whereas the Boxster will swap ends in it's own length!

Personally, I think the Cayman is better than the Boxster...and I very nearly swapped my 911 for one...but it was almost too good/natural...it didn't do all the odd things that make the 911 such a challenge.

But as a pure drivers car, the Boxster is about as good as it'll get.

The power and torque may not sound much...but many years ago I got shown the way home by a Boxster...I was in a 280 BHP/330 lb-ft S3 with a properly sorted chassis and Brembo brakes...oh, and on a wet morning too.
They go...and go well.

I wonder if its just people who have driven neither of them have no real idea and have ignorant views?

Most, I'll wager

Lovely car to drive. But those who know Porsches will always think to themselves "Couldn't afford a 911".

Ignore them.

However, do your research thoroughly and get any potential purchase inspected. Porsches can make you bleed money...

There is an easy solution to that - but not the cheapest solution:
Budget for a Porsche warranty or good aftermarket warranty, and get used to it being an additional yearly cost...approx £1000-1200...and if if breaks, it gets fixed, and you get something nice to run about it whilst the car is fixed.

The other piece of advice would be to drive it daily.
The majority of the 'issues' I suffered were added to by it sitting for long periods, letting the seals dry out etc.
The guys I know that drive Boxsters daily have NO issues...servicing isn't bad, tyre were is superb, as it break wear, and they don't wear suspension bushes out like VWs do!!

In 3 1/2 years and 13000 miles my S3 used 3 sets of tyres, 3 sets of brakes (including some LCR Brembos), wore out 3 suspension bushes and averaged 22 MPG.
My 911 used 2 rear tyres, used one set of brakes and averaged 19 MPG.

Porsches expensive to run?
Not really...the services cost more, but they wear out less 'stuff'.

my friend used to work for a rental company and he took me out in the works Carrera 4 S i know its not what your looking for but i thought it was absolutely great.. the interior was nice comfortable and loads of mod cons.. it sounded sweet as you boot it.. all down to personal preference ive looked at boxster S's but at the moment insurance is just too steep for it to be viable

A friend of mine finally bought one last year after going on and on and on about it for about 2 years before that. Tbf he took about 6 for an independant inspection and was warned off them, so ended up with an rx8 in between. He was quite picky as it had to be black, had to have upgraded bose sound system etc etc....... but he researched the problems they have thoroughly, and took em to a porsche specialist he knew and trusted for inspection. Cost him £100 each time, but money well spent if your spending that much on a car imo. The one he chose was the best of em all, but still needed coil packs which cost him a couple of hundred quid.

How you have managed to go through 3 sets of tyres on a 4WD car in the space of 13k is a mystery to me!! Do you live on the Isle of Sandpaper?

Athough not the same car (but probably more prone to tyre wear than the s3) my R was driven pretty hard most of the time and I still got 10k from a set a tyres.
