Annoying Dash Rattles
« on: 03 October 2011, 21:35 »
Hi, Starting to get a few annoying rattles just started and annoyingly its just after its gone past its 1st birthday.

Has anyone had any rattles from the steering wheel, dash area. Has anyone tried to fix them without going back to VW?

Would the garage look into rattles after the 1st year?

I've had a few rattles but nothing a good hard smash of the area where the sound is coming from hasnt fixed.  If I get one that doesnt clear I'd expect the dealer to correct it up to 3 years....

O dear, here we go again.

VW don't fix rattles unless the part is broken so I suggest you smash the dash up before you go to the dealer!!!!! Tell them it collapsed when you drove over a piece of paper!!!!

Trim to left of steering wheel push it does the rattle stop.
Trim round the radio the same
Dash vents are known to rattle (One of mine does when open)
Sunvisor clips tension reducses and sounds like a dash rattle. Does putting your sun visor down stop it?
Sun visor mirror cover rattles try opening it see if that stops it.
Were the fuse box is on the side of the dash its clips on that cover can rattle tape behind them stop it.

Can you see i have had a few rattles

I had loads of rattles on the GTI out of factory. Could have been Friday afternoon job.
Combimeter rattle, door cards, door strikers, roof headliner, parcel shelf. The dealer fixed them all by simply taking the parts out and puting them back in.

The R in comparison is almost rattle-less.

I would push the garage to fix it. Quote the sales of goods act saying the product they've sold you should last longer that a year. They will resist surely but you can push them to fix it. They can and will try to charge VW for it.
Golf GTI VI DSG - died on the road, resurrected, came back as zombi, sold
R - rising blue, 5-door, DSG, ACC, something something...

Has anyone had any rattles from the steering wheel, dash area.

I had the rattles to the lower left of the steering wheel that Snoopy mentioned. Thumping, banging, gripping various parts of the dash did nothing, but before I took it to the garage I started removing some of the lower panels that were easily accessible. I stopped when I realised it would turn into a bigger job than I wanted but simply reftting those two or three cured that particular rattle 100%. No padding, cushioning tape, just removing and then refitting. Might be worth a try.

The sunvisor clips rattle (also as Snoopy mentioned) was improved a bit by me flexing the metal strip but then by replacing it at the dealer. It's back now, though...

Finally, and doing my nut at the mo', is the constant squeaking of the windows in the frames. Only by lowering them all by about half a cm does the chirruping go away. Not a solution, obviously.

All in all, for a car that's been around for a few years (think Mk5.5, not Mk6), and from a company with the R&D resources of VW, it's a pretty poor performance, especially as VW market it as a super quiet refined vehicle.

Not a single rattle even in Sport mode on bad road surfaces. First car ever that's been so!

Very common, I've had this in a few cars and there's a simple fix. You need to get a bottle of "Gummi Pfledge" and apply it liberally to the rubbers around the door frame (particularly the "felt" rubbers at the top of the door).
