Sruck Radiator Fan problems
« on: 25 April 2005, 08:31 »
My radiator fan keeps binding (and then blowing the fuse) on the surround.

When it's cold it spins freely, but it's when it gets hot that the problems seem to happen.

It only started to happen after recently have my clutch changed (and then having my front engine mount reattached after the bolt came out)

Any ideas on what I can do to stop the fan from sticking will be greatfully received.

What engine is it mate, I have a 16v/1.6 driver one you can have foir the price of postage :)

It sounds to me like the shroud has taken a bash and needs straightening out.

Duh, one day I'll remember to include in the original post  :embarassed:

1.8 16v GTi

I'm figuring on the shroud as well, I'll be taking apart shortly to see if I can solve it.
What I find bizare is that there's no problem when it's cold, does the heat make that much difference (I assume that it's the shroud that's changing shape in the heat)

It could something to do with the bearings in the fan expanding when they get hot or something?  Dunno :D

The good news is the 16v has the same sized rad fan as the 1.6 Golf, so easy to find in your local scrappy :)  Let me know if you want my spare one ;)

Things took a turn for the worse

Looks like the motor the real cause, managed to free the fan, but still blew the fuse on the way home from work.

One of the hoses on the oil cooler's split, it's the one that's like a u shape on it side (according to my Haynes),
not completly sure how I replace it, the bit attached to the oil cooler's easy enough, but then I can see if how it's attached further on (various pipes in the way) I assume it's just another push spring clip, but is there an easy way to get to it.

Thanks for the offer of the fan rj, but due to my time constraints of getting to work, I'm going to have to make a trip to my local autofactors and get the bits I need.

No worries mate :)

I've got a pic of the 16v cooling system, if its the pipe I think it is you're going to be in for a struggle!

Darn right

It's the one just to the left of the oil cooler on the diagram (shaped like a u)

I got the oil cooler side off, but no luck with the end attached to the tee piece, the only way I can think of doing it is to take the front end off (inc radiator) just to get to the clip (only other thing I can think of is to cut the pipe cause it's getting in the way).  Any other suggestions for getting this off?

Do you know the part number?

Looking at the diagram, it might be easier to go in from underneath, or to take off the front end like you say.  The part number for the hose is 037 121 058 A, good luck! :)
