Help with Mk3 anyone? starting issue
« on: 16 September 2011, 19:50 »
Hi, this is a repost as no relies before on mk3 specific link
My MK3 8v GTi has decided not to start after being run for anything more than 5 minutes, it fires up from cold and runs fine, (maybe a little lumpy but that's cos it needs a good service), but as soon as you turn it off (ie at the petrol station) it will not restart, I've recently replaced the MAF, and the crankcase breather, I've also checked the dreaded relay 30, which gets really hot (this doesn't seem right), at the moment I'm going by the rule that if relay 30 is anything other than stone cold, the car won't start, but this is just an educated guess, does anyone have any other ideas on what it could be? I've looked through the cutting out issues previously covered on here, but they all seem to be under different circumstances as mine doesn't actually cut out, it just won't start unless its cold. Oh and not sure if its just a quirk but if you keep turning the car over until the battery dies, it randomly opens the front windows, which will then not stay up until you put juice back into the battery!!?? Random.
Any help/advise is massively appreciated,
Thanks,
Craig

Same prob with mine starting problems when warm, never cold. I changed plugs, leads, coil, dizzy cap, crank sensor. Still had probs until I changed ecu relay and fuel pump relay (£9 each) and been faultless since.

I've narrowed it down to an immobiliser intermittant fault, its the fob type immo, it only works when it wants to anyway, so I'm having the fecker out, has anyone taken theirs out before? Any advice on the wiring etc? If not I'll do what I usually do and wing it, how hard can it be?!?! ill put an aftermarket one in me thinks any suggestions anyone?
This is starting to sound like the rantings of a drunkman...

I have noticed this too, seems to be a common problem.

Right. I've ripped out the immobiliser, wired the ignition and fuel pump back in and tidied the ancillary wiring up, and the problem has gone....for now!! It's not that difficult once you get the drawings out and I.d. the wires, just make sure you know which wires are which before you turn the ignition on, otherwise it can get a bit smokey!!! Hehe!!
Just got coilies to fit, drivers window reg, ABS sensor, oil change and cambelt to do now, then I might treat her to a wheel refurb!!!
If anyone needs any pointers just ask
