Project cheap and slow - mk3 1.8 GL
« on: 01 September 2011, 10:06 »
So I've been looking for a car to tide me over until november, which is when I've finished paying my loan off and will have a years no claims on insurance. Then maybe I can finally get something a bit decent! (Audi?)

I went and looked at the car which was advertised at £400, its a 1.8 GL 1995 with 200,000 miles on the clock. I was expecting a rusted up  piece. However when i went and saw it there was no rust, full electrics working, everything Original, FSH, 8 months MOT and 6 Months Tax and the only thing wrong with it is a small dent on the lower side of the boot.

So i got it for £350 and off I went! Its slow but ok for a few months, anyway heres the only picture i can get at the moment:

Plans are, coilovers and matt black it!

I'm going to do everything myself as if i mess up it doesnt matter, because I'm not expecting any resell value

Let me know what you think!

I'm seeing it as

Fair play..... look up roller painting a car if you're going matte.  sounds daft but works really well and means you don have to mask much.

Good bargain you got yourself there! You should go matt green and keep the texture tops an mouldings black! Matt black the wheel centres, matt green the rim covers and add some 'low and slow' decals, army style!

rollering it would be a lot easier if thats an option, i have brought the spray already though (doh) i got 12 x 500ml reckon this will be enough?

Cheers! That does sounds awesome! ha but not my style and I've always wanted a matt black car for the stealth look!  I don't think stealth and mk3 have ever been used in the same sentence though haha

I did a matt black mk3 a while ago with white G60 steels :) I guess that is why I want to see something different! I was gonna redo it in the army style I suggested but the the head gasket went so I sold it on lol! I reckon 12 cans should be enough though, I dont think I used as many as that :) A word of warning though, if you are gonna spray it outside (like I did) don't be tempted to spray if its too hot (as the paint will dry to quickly) and if its too cold (I had a problem with the paint going milky one morning lol) This may sound obvious to you but I don't want you having the same pitfalls I did!
