Bouncy....
« on: 01 September 2011, 00:02 »
Hello all..
A little while ago invested in new lowering springs all round....fitted them up with no problems, but found that once fitted found the ride at the front to be incredibly..well..bouncy. Whenever id go over larger bumps in the road the front end would not return as it should with just the usual one bounce. So i then took the fronts back off and found that both front shockers had no performance, all they would do is sink into the shock absorber housing but not return back to there original position/state. So replaced these for new ones and found it was better, but still had this slight bounce to the ride.... now i'm kinda thinking that i either bought the wrong springs or was sent the wrong springs for the engine size. or could it be something else...?????   Just after your thoughts please, anyone else had a similar problem, would getting the vr6 strut tops cure it???

Also the front camber angle appears a little odd to me too, instead of having slight negative camber as you might expect, they seem to still be vertical, possibly even a tad positive.??? There doesn't look like there is any adjustment anywhere....or is there?

Any help muchly appreiciated  :)

Thanks Dan

Are you using standard shocks? That could be your problem.

There is adjustment for camber on the two bolts attaching the strut to the hub.

Hi Dan.If you have a vr6 and have fitted 8v or 16v springs to it you would have a problem as vr6 engine is heavier.

I bought one of these to do the camber after changing mine, set at 1 degree negative.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gunson-Trakrite-Magnetic-Alignment-Camber-Castor-Gauge-/360357392586?pt=UK_Measuring_Tools_Levels&hash=item53e6f970ca

I set mine up on level ground by jacking the car up from the front, taking both wheels off and then using a large spirit level across the slam panel sitting on top of two sockets the same length to get it level and clear any obstructions on the slam panel (so the spirit level would sit squarely and not topple off).I then used a second jack to make fine adjustments.Make sure steering is central.

If you have already upset your camber you will need to get it back to zero before you start.I used a smaller magnetic spirit level on the disc to check and reset mine.

I set mine at 1 degree negative on both sides in this position so that when it was back on the ground and the springs were compressed it was about right.

Did you replace the rear shocks too? If your fronts were gone then I'd imagine your rear shocks are too?

What size tyres you running 205 50 15? try upping the pressures as a little test, 50s give alot of sidewall flex and bounce with stiffer suspension.

Is there really adjustment at the point where the two bolts attach the hub to the shock...they don't appear to have eccentric bolt heads on them...??

Think i may try upping the tyre pressures to see what happens. Seems like a pretty feasible solution. Its gotta be that or the spring as as soon as i put it under any load i.e. when cornering there is no bouncing sensation what so ever...

Thanks for the help chaps!! :)

if you undo the two bolts you will see that the hub moves in and out. There are no eccentric bolts but the holes in the hub are bigger than those in the strut !.
