In fairness I think the people now looking at Mk5 GTIs will be those who want the general excellence of the MK2 in a more modern (more reliable in their eyes?) package.

I think in fairness MK5s are actually one of the more desirable used hatches out there right now.

As already stated, the main issue with selling a MK5 atm isn't that they are not desirable - it's that they belong to a faction of cars which, due to spiralling fuel costs and the ridiculous UK VED taxation system, are generally not falling into the same 'affordable sports' category as they once did.

I think with a little patience a sound MK5 GTI will still sell - although realistically we all need to accept that the MK5 is no longer regarded by the general uninformed masses as the 'pinnacle' of modern GTIdom and accept residuals will take a dent as a result.

To most people, the prices that ED30's are been advertised for seems like alot of money for a Mk5 Golf.

When I bought my car, I originally though about a Mk5 GT TDI, but having seen the prices of late low mileage ones, they seemed expensive compared to the falling prices of early Mk6's. I decided to leave it for a while until I could save some more money and get the Mk6. I think there are people considering ED30's now priced at £13k, but deep down are thinking that that money will nearly get them into a Mk6 in 12 months time.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

when you say in six months time...... what spec mk6 are you talking about as imo, ED30 compared to a bog standard mk6 is miles apart.

Popped mine up to test the water as such, as I'm getting the itch (though I'm struggling to see what, other than another GTI or possibly a R, I would go) for - £8750 for a 06 plate with 45k on clock. Given the Glass's valuation this seemed a very sensible amount to get a quick sale...

Very little interest other than the usual con artists. The time of year doesn't help, I'm sure, but a quick foray onto autotrader identified that they're all over the place, with some (ropey presumably and high mileage) 05 plates going for a little as 5.5k. I'm sure residuals will get more sensible in the new year, but after seeing this I'm in no rush to get rid of the car.

I also toyed with selling mine earlier in the year but was just getting silly offers, have now decided to keep hold of it until next summer at least.  I will hopefully have a better idea of what I actually want by then, was thinking S3 and getting it mapped or maybe scirocco R.  There isn't lots of stuff about at the moment that takes my fancy.

i would choose the S3 over the Scirocco R as i like the S3 shape, however and Scirocco is a head turner due to the elegance, so saying that i could easily be swayed if i had the choice.

The only thing that puts me off about the s3 is its now a bit dated, I'm not sure on the suspension set up on the rear either I'm sure its different to the mk5, will have to test drive both at some point and get a better idea of which I prefer.  Until then though my mk5 will do me fine.

With the new A3 out around the corner it will look increasingly dated I fear - did look at S3 for the same reason but I've concluded a Golf remains the best 'all rounder'. Other option I've concluded I might need to look at if the residuals remain so silly is just to run the GTI into the ground as a 'jack of all trades' for years to come, and get something silly for a weekend / track car.

I'm trying not to worry too much about what my mk5 is worth as by the time it goes the mileage will be fairly high and I will probably just part ex it.  Its all paid for so its the just the servicing and running costs that will screw me.
