purchase going round in bloody circles
« on: 23 August 2011, 15:54 »
The lovely bargain camera that i bought a few weeks back has decided to break  the battery holder latch has now snapped off and the camera doent last 2 mins even with fully charged batteries...

so i've decided to buy another one but...

i start off on ebay thinking............... "just buy a nice point and shoot and save up for something nice" ...then whilst browsing i move onto a bridge camera ............"a bridge will do, will give me more control over the pics" .............. so looking at fuji's etc but then i think why not just go for a used dslr like a 350d  :undecided: not much more spends but much better quality of photo ........"dont be silly you cant afford it"

back to square one again... i just want a nice camera with a good auto function but also with manual setting for more control over my photos..

Please help me choose!

£100 max for a non dslr or
£150ish  for a used dslr

Nothing wrong with a secondhand DSLR and it will (probably) take better photos than a £100 point and shoot.
I bought both my DSLRs secondhand and had no problems.

You can start off with a 350D (if Canon are your thing) with a kit lens for that price, then save up and add a couple of decent lenses and then in a year upgrade the camera body (keeping the lenses) for a newer Canon body, like a 450D (still secondhand but newer).
Buying decent lenses (these can be secondhand too) is worth the money, because you can keep them for years while you just change camera body to upgrade functions and sensor size. With Canon, you could buy a lens, use it on a 350D and carry on using it even if you upgrade right up to a 7D body.

Not everyone has £500 odd spare to splash and I wouldn't buy a camera on finance.
So yeah, I would spend £150 ish on a s/h DSLR, buy a lens or two over the course of the next year while you learn how to use it, then upgrade the body later. That way you're not spending hundreds of pounds all in one go.
Also with a cheaper s/h camera you won't be as scared about using it, dropping it or taking it out and about.
Bear in mind however that a 350D is quite old now, and it might have been heavily used.
The main problem with DSLRs is that they use a physical shutter, so this only lasts so long and after 20,000 photos it might have had enough. So when looking at s/h cameras, check how many photos it's taken (shutter accuations/operations).

Also worth noting SLRs can be serviced and repaired, although you'll be looking at £100 for that.

£150 would be fair unless it's done mega-actuations.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Both of my Canons the 400D and 50D are reconditioned bodies

Bought them through the Canon Ebay Store sure you would be able to pick up a decent enough Body and lens through thier or similar

i've been gay and bought a Fujifilm FinePix S5700, got it for 45 notes from ebay.

it will do me for now.... my back balance wont even let me stretch to a used dslr body at the moment.

i will try to get the best out of it in the meantime

You can still learn a lot about photography with a compact or bridge camera, particularly about composition and using available light.
Get yourself a book and learn about the manual settings on the camera.
