Got my new 16v - a few questions......
« on: 17 April 2005, 15:05 »
Just picked up my 89 16V.
Looks great but have a few probs to iron out... any help would be great.

1) Has a quick shift gear thingy - goes in ok ( except 1st which is bloody hard to find) but gear lever has LOADS of play - waggles around all over the shop. Easy to fix? should I go back to standard ?
2) When cold it does not idle ( keeps stalling ). Fine when warm. Seems to have an almost flat battery when cold ( doubt this is the case as its a decent one.
3) Where is the best place to get a standard gear surround and gaiter if I decide to get shut of the quick shift and its tacky aluminium surround?

Hope you guys can help !

gearstick waggle is normal but its pretty simple fix theres been loads of talk before about replacing the linkage to tighten it up alot but sounds to me like its been messed with before and hasnt been put back right maybe because of the short shifter thats been installed removing the short shifter and replacing the linkage and washers in the gearstick itself will massivly improve it. for the surround and gaiter ebay is always a good place to look or try some scrappies.

Visit http://www.gsfcarparts.com and buy a gearlever bush repair kit, should sort most of the play in the stick.  You might want to look at buying some relay shaft bushes from http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/ForSale/ShiftLinkage.shtml#RelayShaftBushings, about £15 inc postage from the US.  (You can only buy the whole relay shaft from VW and GSF)

Oh and if you haven't already fit a weighted shift rod from a rod change MK3, smoothese everything out nicely :)

Also is it easy to slip the car into reverse without pressing down on the stick?  If so you'll need a gearlever ball repair kit from VW, Its pretty straightforward to do but a bit fiddly. Part number is 191 798 116A, I would recommend you get the genuine kit, this isn't a job you want to be doing twice!.

1. Remove the gearstick gaitor & centre console to give you more room to work
2. Undo the 2 10mm nuts either side of the gearstick.

Now get under the car
3. Remove the exhaust centre heat shield by removing the 6 nuts/clips holding it on, then rotate it round the exhaust an off the car
4. Shove the housing up into the car, it is only held in by gravity & grease at this point
5. Remove 4 13mm nuts holding the plate
6. Now get back in the car, pull up on the stick and push down on the plate you have just undone
7. Next Jiggle the housing about untill you can get it out
8. If the ball looks like it is worn you can remove it, I didn't bother as it looked OK. Its tricky, you need to press the ball upwards while someone holds the gearlever down, then you need to remove the split pin. Not an easy task!
9. Refitting is the reverse of removal

once you've done the bushes you'll probably need to adjust the linkage slightly to sort the gears out. Looking in the engine bay you'll see the selector rod addatched to the gearstick, on the end of it is a clamp held on with a pinch bolt. Loosen this and move the clamp very slightly to bring it all back in line.

The way I did it was to loosen the clamp, stick it in third and move the stick left & right until third was exactly in the middle.  Then check 1st & 5th are easily selectable and tighten the clamp bolt, job done :)
