Need to buy standard 16V springs, but where?
« on: 06 August 2011, 14:45 »
Hi there,
Sorry to be asking a question with my first post, but I've looked and not found: I need to buy new springs for my J reg GTI 16V Engine code KR
But I live in the countryside and like to play on country lanes with bad pot holes everywhere, so I want to buy four springs of similar spec to VW OEM, no drop at all from 16V standard.

Any idea's where I could get these from or recommended makes and models that still give a good ride without too much drop?

I'm using gas filled Bilstein shocks which are fine, its just the cheap springs they came with that are not, I bottom out with 2 rear passengers after only 2 years since springs where fitted!

You can get them from the dealers... But they aren't cheap..

I looked at buying some last year - but the price made it a no go when you can buy the likes of Eibach springs for £130.00 a set, which is what I fitted you can get them with -30mm drop (GTI) which is -20mm on 16V's as far as I know...

Thanks for the quick response mate, yeah Eibach where gonna be my second choice, its just one or two reviews said they're not great on rough roads (most of the roads road here).
I was looking getting them from:-

When they say 20mm drop do they mean 20mm from standard GTI 16V or a standard golf? I always though it meant 2 cm from GTI 16V original?
Thanks again

the 16V set's are different from the 8V...

So one would assume when they say -20mm it will be over the 16V original height..

The roads in Sheffield are poop too and I don't have any issues with ride quality... Yes it harder than say my Sons 1.6 Driver but the handling out ways this.. IMO

You can get stock springs from any motor factor, alternatively I find eibachs springs are very good for maintaining ride quality as long as you dont have stupidly harsh dampers which you dont. As for buying them from ECP, good luck finding which ones you actually want, their online site is fookin awefull in terms of the product descriptions adn they only list ones for a 1.8 engine which could be anything from a driver to a valver, both of which have different spring rates.
I had Mk3 VR6 eibachs on my Mk2 8v Gti with Koni adjustables and they were still fine with the damping turned down, even if they made the front end sit up like a motorboat lol. Before you ask, I wanted the dampers and they came with the springs secondhand at a bloody good price hence the use of the VR springs and no, I dont know why the person I bought them off had VR items on Mk2 dampers unless they had a VR's Mk2 lol.

Thanks for all the help guys, wish I'd joined this forum ages ago!

How do I get the 25% off at Eurocarparts? Is there a voucher code or something?

P.S. Might be selling her soon (I'm in two minds at the moment) Is it ok to post for sale information on this board, under MK2?

Wicked cheers for the warning!

Do you know about how I get the 25% discount at eurocarparts too? Does it apply to everything they sell?
